'psycho-ceramics' 2 is the animated version. Back when this site was young I warned that 'psycho-ceramics2', " the images in psycho-ceramics are about 30k, and you are going to need a a browser that can handle animated gifs if you are going to brave 'psycho-ceramics 2'". (Isn't it quaint now? Cutting edge back then though...Remember that this was made 10 years ago.)
Never mind the quality, feel the depth. You might want to click here to read some assorted musings..
These images were made in 1995 in a
collaboration between *beyond utility* and *hardware photographics*.
It was a bright day and the photos were taken with my 'new' second hand camera out in the back lane.
The face pack dried really quickly in the sun and tightened on my skin, to become an uncomfortable mask very quickly. When the hand applied the red earthenware slip it came as a relief, thought quickly I became lost in a matrix of possible meanings and emotions.
What was I doing? What was I thinking? The red clay took on a host of meanings in parallel. It was shit, it was dirt, it was a mask, it was make-up, and it was camouflage. It was at once a welcoming relief and a baffling layering of contradictory messages.
I chose to reproduce them here in order
'to
remove myself from them, to put distance (and glass) between myself and
my image in order to try to unravel the layers of meanings and the
matrix of identities which I inhabit..'.
